DIURETICS AND ELECTROLYTE DISTRURABANCES

Abstract
The development of more potent diuretic agents with a greater efficacy provided many advantages as well as complications for clinical trials. The disturbances of sodium and potassium induced by the use of those potent diuretics has been briefly reviewed.
Depletion of the edematous patients of their excess sodium is the primary aim of diuretic treatment, however, severe depletion of sodium either acute or chronic form must be checked carefully. It is advisable that diuretic treatment should begun from quite low dosage level and increase according to the patient¢¥s requirement. The control of dietary salt intake prior to diuretic treatment Should not be ignored.
Disturbances of potassium balance are the most common electrolyte disorders following the use of newer potent diuretics and eiter depletion or elevation of serum potassium level may cause hazard to the patient. The combination treatment with many diuretic agents must be aware of those possibilities of severe electrolyte and fluid disturbances.
